April R. Merchant recently joins Butler Norris & Gold after maintaining a successful solo practice. A former New Hampshire native, she grew up in a small town where neighbors were treated like family, and everyone was treated with respect. Coming from a long line of military veterans, she is no stranger to hard work, respect, and the ability to preserve despite the circumstance.
She prides herself on her ability to build long-term relationships with her clients. Her wide range of experience and knowledge allows her to personally empathize with people who are experiencing or planning for difficult life situations. This also allows her to provide just the right balance of objective guidance and advocacy for her clients.
Organizations and Memberships
Attorney Merchant is licensed to practice law in Connecticut at the state and federal district court levels and the US Supreme Court of the United States.
She is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association where she is part of the Estates & Probate, Professional Discipline and Young Lawyers Sections and, a member of National Association of Elder Law Attorneys.
Ms. Merchant received her juris doctor degree from Suffolk University Law School. She was awarded the Trustee Academic Scholarship while attending.
April graduated with honors from Southern New Hampshire University with a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance with a minor in International Business. She is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.
Prior to receiving her bachelor’s degree, she attended New Hampshire Technical Institute. After graduating, she was asked to join the American Bar Association Advisory Committee and assisted in getting New Hampshire Technical Institute certified as the first ABA approved paralegal program in the State; and later the creation and implementation of the Nurse Paralegal program and its ABA accreditation. She continued to serve on the advisory board for sixteen years. She served as Vice President and Treasurer of the Woman’s Club of Concord assisting homeless woman and victims of domestic violence. She assisted in the creation of the Collaborative Law Alliance of New Hampshire and worked on the first collaborative divorce in the State. She also assisted in developing the New Hampshire Family Division Rules and helped author the New Hampshire Divorce Handbook.
When she is not working with her clients, or volunteering in the community she enjoys reading by the water, or training, and performing at professional ballroom dance competitions and events.
